Dear Reese,
I pace in front of the water fountain Backpack poorly packed on my shoulder (I will have to go back for my laptop charger in the office) (And then my phone in the bathroom) I talk numbers on a work phone call And watch my watch Five minutes late, ten minutes late By the time I get to daycare, it's fifteen minutes late I run a calcuation in my head, when will it be okay for me to say I have to go When is it too soon Will it sound too frantic Will I not get calls like this again If I brush it off too quckly When this call means I'm in the room I asked to be in It's all fine It's all impossible I take deep breaths on the drive home While we listen to the Lodge, 106.9 Because my phone isn't taking a charge I know you do not know I'm late But you have a hard time this evening And I wonder if maybe you do We have dinner at the cottage My phone charges again Cappt makes me a Diet Squirt mixed with tart cherry juice Calls it: "The Cherry Keep" Before bed, you and I play a game We pretend your limbs are vibrating out of our control As we wrestle them in your pajamas It makes you laugh And makes it easier to get you into your pajamas My phone is still taking a charge Tomorrow, I'll be on time
Love,
Mama
